studio brief 4

The 4th and final brief for this module asks us to do the following;
  • Produce a graphic response/ graphic product /piece of work that makes a statement, comment, observation or gives advice about your experience on your first year of this course.
  • Work with any appropriate media or format and develop and identify the content will be entertaining, advisory or informative.

After going over the brief i began thinking about what i have learnt and what observations i have made throughout the year; what i have learnt is that you need to learn how spend your money wisely, and the observation i've made is that i spend it badly.

I began to think about how i could express my experiences with money or therefor lack of, and then i thought about how many students i know also struggle with budgeting, or quite frankly just buy stuff they don't need. It seems, to me especially anyway, that i started the year with a much more naive view on how much things cost, and then slowly as the year has progressed, my bank balance has decreased and i now stand and consider whether i really need to buy a new toothbrush or whether my current one will do.

I've thought of the concept of creating a kind of zine, filled with images of first year students (perhaps photographed in their bed rooms)and text accompanying them; detailing what they would spend their last £10 on.
The intent of the piece will be to show what different people prioritize and what they value spending money on, i feel like it will be an interesting incite for people moving to university to show how different students would spend their last ten pounds.

I thought of the possibility and risk of people not being truthful if their identities were revealed, and then i thought of the concept of creating a mask/head which they could put on for the photo, taking inspiration from the film Frank.
Not only will the 3D head act as a way to hopefully gain more truthful and hopefully more funny answers, as i want the zine to be quite humorous, but it will also be visually pleasing and i feel as if it could really work.
The idea behind taking photographs of the people in their bedrooms and asking them a question but not revealing their identity is something i find quite interesting, as i believe it will be interesting to see how much you can tell about someone from the enviroment they live in and what they spend their money on; it provides the opportunity for the reader/viewer to imagine for themselves what this person could look like/ their personalities.

I will take this concept to a crit and see what feedback i get on the idea.
