Throughout the course of this module I’ve engaged with the principles of design both within the module and throughout the rest of the modules on the course. Using grids was a first for me, at first (as evidenced in the first colour book) I did not see the effects they could have on my designs, however when it came to reflecting on the work I’d produced within the module, the book was the one which I really thought could improve. Using grids was a breakthrough to me, I had the preconception that they would make my rather illustrative style of design too ridged, however I’ve learnt that through appropriate use they elevate pieces of design in to more visually cohesive and effective works.
The structure of the module, although unexpected, allowed me to reflect on the work I had previously designed and compare it to the work I’m now producing, this was surprising, to see how much my attitudes to design had changed. In addition to this, it was interesting to see how the design principles I had been exploring at the beginning of the module made their way in to all of the briefs I had completed. As a result of this, the adjustments I’ve made to past work in preparation for the hand in have been significant in showing what I’ve learnt and the developed awareness of how and where to use the principles I’ve learnt, such as what colours work in harmony together, the personalities of type and the benefits of using a gird.
The module has really engaged me in terms of allowing me to create designs with set restrictions. Of course there are certain restrictions with each brief, however these are normally tailored to the individual designer, however within this module the limitations engaged me as a designer more, for example, using the marber grid.
The importance of paper stock has become increasingly more apparent as it came to considering how the final outcomes could be printed, paper quality has the possibility to help or hinder the intended communication of the design, something I wasn’t too aware of entering the module.
