type experimentation

During a crit i came up with the name of the comic cover 'terms of terror' which is a play on a horror comic from the 70's called 'tomb of terror'.
The type from existing vintage comics is bold, characterised and more of a piece of illustration, i began to look at existing horror title types to identify the characteristics within them, so i could then later apply them to the terms of terror typography.

Below are a selection of some horror comic covers from the 1970's, as previously mentioned, the type is very illustrated and almost animated through the use of wavy lines, bold colours and it's placement.
All of the main title type is capitalised, which is an element i will carry on through the terms of terror type. The type is either textured; through the use of wobbly lines and almost decayed edges, or it's bold and straight, i believe i should experiment with both characteristics to see which works.

I began to experiment with hand drawn type using all uppercase letter forms. the type on the top right seemed too playful and not comic like; i feel this was due to the wavy line quality which is more reminiscent of the 60's than horror comics.
The type on the upper left works in terms of the structure of the title however the 'terms of' feels too small and doesn't really flow with the rest of the type. Finally the bottom right type seems at this point to be the most effective in communicating the characteristics previously looked at within the horror comics of the 70's, it's legible, bold and clean, however there needs to be an element of more 'horror' within the type.

I then experimented with a more directly horror based type, with the use of dripping elements mimicking blood, i think this type works however having the whole title in the same type isn't common to the horror comics i previously researched and so i belive having the word 'terror' in a type resembling this would be more effective than having the whole title in such.

I wanted to keep the dripping effect of the previous type but felt that if i was to use a different hand drawn type for 'terms of' then there should be some similarity, i experimented with using a wavy line and the dripping effect, similar to the out of the night comic previously looked at.

I combined two previous hand drawn types in order to create the main title, i believe this combination works well in communicating the playfulness of a comic whilst still communicating the horror element through the drip effect. I tried out several colour combinations, with red being prominent throughout all of them (similar to existing comics). The colour pallet will be decided once the main cover illustration has been completed.
