After collecting responses from people in my class i decided to reach out to people on the internet to see their responses, i created an instagram post (see below) asking people what strangers call them and it how makes them feel, i received a number of responses from (mostly women) across the world.
Below are screen shots of the responses i received.
After looking at all of the above responses, there was a divide between people not taking offence to the words and others feeling creeped out by them. I decided to document to words that women most commonly did have a problem with; and their reasons why.
Sweetheart: creepy when older men say it, they don't refer to older colleges by that name so why me,
makes them feel small and gross, makes their blood boil, condescending
Goodgirl: two responses both noted how men they encounter regularly (work college and dpd driver) call them goodgirl, with it being viewed as being patronising and uncomfortable.
Babe, baby: gross, makes me feel like a pet pig
hun, hunny, honey: 'a pet name that has never ceased to make me feel like a child'
Darling:: creepy unless said by a woman
Above are just a handful of the response i received, across all of the results a common factor was the fact that a lot of the responses stated that if a woman were to refer to them as said names they wouldn't have a problem with it, however when it's from an unsolicited male they find it uncomfortable. I believe the next stage in my research is to looking to why unsolicited 'terms of endearment' by men make women feel patronised, creeped out, small and gross.
