GARM GUIDE

After meeting with Daniel, who is now my client for this brief, i asked him to provide me with details on the publication i will be designing for him as he has failed to provide me with the document which was meant to be filled out and given to our partner.

The publication is titled 'Garm Guide' and is, in short, a students guide to clothing in Leeds. The type of clothing the Garm Guide features is vintage clothing bought from various charity and vintage shops around Leeds, details of which will be in the publication, along with interviews and images of students taken on 35mm film.

In terms of the specifications my client gave me, the publication will be A5, cheap to make as it will be targeted towards Leeds students and sold for £3, it will be available to buy in universities/colleges and feature hand drawn type rather than digital.

The client wanted me to explore the possibility of making the guide loose in terms of structure, as "the clothing featured in the images is predominantly baggy shirts".
We also explored the idea of removing the background from the images taken, so the focal point is the person and the clothing they are wearing, i suggested an idea of filling the empty background space with illustrations/prints of patterns mimicking whatever pattern can be seen on the clothing, and he really liked that idea.
In terms of colours, it was felt that colours should be taken from the images and used throughout the book, due to shirts which are featured in the images being bright, bold and colourful, it is thought at this point that the colours used in the publication will too be colourful and bold.

The client also wanted the book to be thick, however due to the price range the publication is going to be sold at, the amount of pages may become limited, depending on the cost of the paper and pages, however this will be explored more in depth as development continues.
Another idea i suggested was to create a map somewhere within the publication where the locations of charity/vintage shops (provided via the interviews from the people photographed, which will also be in the publication) can be found around Leeds. This idea was also positively received and the client would like this to be explored as a possibility to include inside the publication.

Another element i was advised to work with was to include illustrations of some of the clothing within the publication, my client liked the idea of fashion sketches being placed along side the images.
A double page spread is going to be allocated to each outfit, depending on image amount of images provided.
