Wayfinding Evaluation

Creating a subjective wayfinding system required me to ignore the objective wayfinding systems accross the city, disregarding the sans serif, clean lined, muted coloured approach which is so universal. The wayfinding system i created was subjective to homeless people, the life style they live and the help they may require. I wanted to ensure that throughout this system there was a clear personality which made the system individual to it’s audience to give the people who have so little, something that is designed for them only.
I think the collaging route was the correct one to take (see figure 1), having wanted to not use any computerised type and stay away from the digital side of things as much as possible (to push the punk aesthetic) collaging allowed the design to have another dimension, creating individualities within the type from the creases or the fold of the paper. Not only was this aesthetically appropriate and effective, it also related to the audience wit the fact that the elements of the poster have character, they’re not corporate or universal.
After looking at the system as a whole, it’s as if i subconsciously ensured the wayfinding system for the Hospital had text which was the most visible, the collaging seems more considered to accommodate the text rather than the other two systems where the elements seem less considered, perhaps this is because i believe that the Hospital is the most useful service the system can provide.
An adjustment to the system i would make is to actually paste the posters on to surfaces rather than using tape (see figure 2) to try and have some actual texture on the system rather than the 2D textures created through collaging and scanning.
