Further design development

Follow the feedback i received i began to create designs that featured Mantles images more heavily. Below are some designs i came up with.
The 4th and 5th designs (both on the same row) are the ones which i feel are most effective and visually cohesive. I like the collage effect of them and the layering of text from an image Mantle sent me along with the actual elements.
I received some brief feedback on the 5th design from a tutor suggesting that the elements would look better if they were cut up more like separate images; this has given me the idea to cluster some elements together to create a shape of some sort...almost like a crop circle?? (Idea development to follow)

Design development

I used the images i took along with the images Mantle supplied me with to create the above designs.
These were just initial ideas, playing around with layering different elements.
None of these designs particularly stood out to me, this was also the case during a group crit, it was decided that their needed to be more images from the ones which Mantle sent me as these are the most interesting and most accurate to the event.
It was also noted that text needed to be included somewhere on the piece to give the viewer more of a clear idea about what event is being celebrated.

Images - society jacket shoot

The following images were taken on North Street in Leeds, where the first YUFOS meeting took place.
I wanted the images to capture the jacket more than anything, so i could use the image as an element in later collage based development.

Below i've selected 4 images which i feel work best in showing the jacket and add to the celebratory nature of the print.
I will work with these images along side he images provided by Mantle.

Artist research - design links

here are some pieces by Richard Hamilton  whom i will take inspiration from in later development of my A3 print, I really like the use of colour and collage; incorporating different elements and materials together to create a piece

Richard Hamilton

Initial designs

Here I have begun using the images provided by Philip to create designs which capture the celebratory theme of the poster.
I took these designs to a crit whilst also explaining my ideas for either development; abandoning the jacket idea and using Philip's images instead.
In the crit however, people really liked the jacket (see previous post) and stated that t wouldn't be 'cliche' or making a mockery of the society, it just allows people to usnderstand the theme more and also celebrates in both past and present by using Philips images from the 80's and photos of the jacket on a model today.
I'm going to photograph the jacket on a model in the location of Notth Street which is where the society meetings took place; to further the contextual links between the piece and the past organisation.
Having looked at the work of Richard Hamilton I feel that the combination of collaging the past images, present images and colour together will work really well in ensuring the elements work together as a cohesive piece.
Below is continued development using the imagery provided by Philip, very early stages of design working with the two tone restriction of the piece and also turning the images in to bitmap images reading to be screen printed.
Pink and blue have been used as they're very bold colour and I want the piece to be eye catching due to the quirky nature of the society, however as I begin to work with the images I will soon take, a deeper understanding of what colours to use and why will hopefully be developed.

Idea development - Philip Mantle

I recently found an article from 2013 discussing UFO sightings in Yorkshire with a quote from a man called Philip Mantle who attended the first YUFOS (Yorkshire UFO Society) meeting in 1979.
I contacted Mantle asking him questions about the meeting and his time in the society, he provided me with a vast amount of information regarding the society and UFO sightings across Yorkshire (email below), in addition to this Mantle provided me with old film photographs from the 80s capturing moments from inside society meetings and group expeditions (see below).

Having read and seen Philips participation in the group and how much of his life he has dedicated to the YUFOS, i believe it would be best to focus my A3 celebratory print on the YUFOS but in a more respectful way. Before hand i was designing rather cliche jackets and signs which almost made a joke of the society and their work, however having received photographs and articles around the subject i believe i need to tackle the subject manor in a more respectful, accurate and celebratory way for the truth.
